This is what I am obsessed with lately – the Polish musical titled “1989”. It’s about events from years 1980 – 1989, which lead to parliamentary elections on 4 June 1989 and the victory of the Solidarity opposition. It was the beginning of the end of communist rule in Poland.
It may sound boring on paper, but that musical is anything but. It’s heavily inspired by Hamilton. It basically started because one of the creators threw a joke a few years ago about making Polish Hamilton about year 1989. And then they did just that.
The musical premiered two years ago in theater in Gdańsk and then in Kraków. And, after first enthusiastic reviews, I did want to go and see it in one of those cities. But RL always interfered. But finally two weeks ago there was live transmission on TV of the performance in the theatre in Kraków. And I watched it, and yes, all those reviews were right. It is amazing. And it does the wonderful, powerful thing that made me teary-eyed a few times - when it gives voice to women who were also there, who fought and suffered, too, but were usually overlooked when men took center stage.
What I find disappointing however is that I can’t find that performance available for downloading anywhere on the internet. Seriously, not even one of those 800k people who watched it live on TV recorded it and uploaded it somewhere? I’m so disappointed in you, my fellow countrymen. 😉
An album with all the songs will come out in autumn. Yesterday they released the music video with one song “Danuta odbiera Nobla”. It’s my favorite song from the musical. And that vid is fantastic, and it made my teary-eyed, too.

Ewa, Joanna, Henryka, Anna, Alina zasługują by wymienić je z imienia
To my – połowa Solidarności, połowa tych mitycznych dziesięciu milionów
To my – połowa, która nigdy nie rości sobie praw do tego by urządzać życie komuś
To my – te które wyszły z domu, te które zostały w domu, bo im nie miał kto pomóc
To my – działałyśmy, walczyłyśmy, nie czekając na nagrody i nie skarżąc się nikomu”
