two notes on music (despite talking about spotify, links are for youtube for easier accessibility)
1. a few weeks ago, at work, I was letting spotify play me some "things the algorithm thinks you'd like" playlist or other, and my brain caught on one in a way that, for once, made me go "oh I should actually hit the like button on this" (I am SO BAD at doing that) (in this case it helped that I was Waiting For The Elevator). so I did. and then, a minute later, I was like. "wait. what was the name of that again." and looked at it properly, because it'd pinged in recognition but it took that minute for me to understand why. and. I am a parody of myself.
2. in the completely other direction of music spotify will play for me, this (recent) cover of Madonna's 'Frozen' came on today and I was just like "wow okay this sure tosses me back to being a young teenager" about immediately recognising it.
Did seeing an artist completely unknown to you do a dance challenge with someone you are a fan of ever prompt you to look into unknown-to-you artist and actually lead to you getting into them?
(I'm curious about this, after a conversation with a friend on the topic. The answer for both of us is "No, and it's not likely to ever happen." so I'm wondering if this... marketing strategy (?) usually works for people.)
The Brightness Between Us by Eliot Schrefer (Queer Ducks (and Other Animals): The Natural World of Animal Sexuality) was excellent. It's part sequel, part prequel to The Darkness Outside Us.
As you definitely need to go into Book 1 knowing as little as possible, I can't talk about the plot of Book 2. Let's just say that it was a pleasure to meet these characters again.
There's major m/m, minor m/nb, as well as an asexual female character.
Rec time! Did you read/watch/listen to something you really liked and would love other people to know about, too? Don't have the time or energy to make a full promo post, or think such a small thing doesn't merit a separate entry?
Here's your chance to share with the class! Just drop a comment with a link and maybe a couple of words in description. No need to overthink things, it can be as simple as Loved this! or OMG, look at that!. (You don't need to keep it short, though, write as much as you want.)

I’m staying near a northern Wisconsin lake at 45.658965, -89.497625, where I’ll be revelling in 15:45 hours of daylight on the summer solstice. The logged-over forest is mostly red pine, and wow they’re pollinating—creating very abstract art near the dock
Pine pollen forms semi-opaque circles over shallow sandy beach
In the past, shows used to create “clip episodes” which were made up of segments of other episodes with a brief wraparound story. This was usually done to save money, extend writing time, or cover for the absence of a lead character.
Is this something you miss? Is there one you've particularly liked? Given currently shorter seasons, are these still being used in any shows you’ve seen?
Getting into my car after a walk, I found this elegantly decorated beetle on my shirt. It has the very appropriate scientific name of Calligrapha philadelphica, also known as the Dogwood Leaf Beetle.
When it opened its wings to fly, I was surprised to see its inner wings were red. I guess that could be the wax seal on the parchment. :)

We were only in Portland for a day but we had enough time for a few hours in the International Rose Test Garden. In fact we didn't even spend that long because it was smaller than expected and some bushes hadn't even bloomed yet (despite what the website said as mid-May being an ideal viewing time). We took about half the time we were there trying to park. It was also the most overcast morning of the trip -- we had amazing weather the rest of the time.
Nonetheless what was in bloom was lovely. ( Read more... )
This was our second year running this exchange, and we really appreciated all the work everyone, new and returning, put in!
For future iteratons, to help us grow this exchange, we'd love to hear your feedback below (anon is enabled). Feedback of any kind is welcome, but we are particularly interested in hearing about one topic:
Art Medium. This was our first year allowing art as a medium. For those who made use of this option as a recipient or creator, any feedback would be appreciated.
