Maybe you remember how I wrote a few weeks ago that the Korean drama The King: Eternal Monarch looked like something I would enjoy? I was right, I do enjoy it. A lot. I started watching on Saturday and watched 9 episodes in three days. And not because it’s particularly good. It’s also not bad, generally I would say it’s rather mediocre. But it is compelling and very good for my id.

I love the idea of parallel worlds in general, and I love the execution in this drama – real world’s South Korea and the parallel world of the Kingdom of Corea.

The male lead King Lee Gon can be a bit annoying at times, but he’s not a loathsome arrogant asshole thankfully. He’s sometimes amusing, but mainly rather boring, but he’s very pretty, so at least he’s nice to look at.

I like the female lead Jeong Tae Eul, she’s ok. But I don’t care for the main romance at all. I even fast-forward sometimes through some of the long scenes when they look into each other eyes meaningfully and nothing else happens.

But my favorite character, and I’m not surprised at all about it, is Captain Jo Yeong – Lee Gon’s childhood friend and the Chief of the Royal Guard. He’s so loyal and devoted to Lee Gon, and that is like catnip to me. It seems as if he doesn’t have a life besides serving his King and his kingdom. He’s so straight-laced and serious. He’s also very good at what he does, and very, very beautiful. How could I not love him? 😊 And he has amazing chemistry with Lee Gon, so of course I ship them hard.

And Woo Do Hwan is a great actor, because he also plays Captain Jo’s South Korean counterpart – Jo Eun Seob, and he’s so different in that part. Jo Eun Seob is the complete opposite of Jo Yeong – he’s laid-back and cheerful and smiling a lot, and also a bit of a coward.

Woo Do Hwan has a main part in My Country: The New Age, which is also on Netflix here, so I plan to watch it next just for him.

I’m so full of enthusiasm and ready to dive in head first into a new fandom. There is fanfic on AO3 – a decent amount of it even (I’m in such small fandoms lately that 150 works in English is a decent amount to me 😊). And Lee Gon/Jo Yeong is the most popular pairing. Yay!

That's on Netflix, isn't it? I think I've got that one in my queue to try. The premise sounded good.
