Sometimes out of nowhere, or more honestly, out of endlessly scrolling through TikTok, you stumble into a story that resets your heart a little. Not because it's dramatic or complicated, but because it sneaks up on you with something real.

Now, I know this whole thing sounds like a perfect premise for a Disney movie, but just like some Disney movies, if you look beyond the cute characters, you find a more profound message. And to me, a guy whose cynicism is untameable 90% of the time, this video hit as an important reminder that connection isn't just nice to have, it's what keeps everything moving forward. Whether it's two completely different animals figuring out how to survive together or just me trying to feel less alone in a world that doesn't slow down for anyone.

What makes stories like this stick is how simple they are. Two living beings find comfort in each other, and suddenly life feels lighter. That's it. No speeches. No labels about differences. Just quiet survival made possible by having someone else there. It's the kind of story that lingers. I haven't stopped thinking about it, and that's why I'm here writing about it. Because you start thinking about your own life, the people you leaned on when things went sideways, the random friendships that grew from pure circumstance.

Being the cynical, philosophy-obsessed person I am, I find it pretty funny how a small clip, tucked between trends and chaos, manages to hit as hard as anything planned and polished. and remind you that love and belonging aren't complicated ideas. They happen when someone shows up, stays close, and keeps you from feeling like you're the only one trying to figure it out.

And if you ask me, that's exactly the reminder worth getting this Christmas.

Wiktionary's etymology:

nyce, nice, nys, from Old French nice, niche, nisce (“simple, foolish, ignorant”), from Latin nescius (“ignorant, not knowing”); compare nesciō (“to know not, be ignorant of”), from ne (“not”) + sciō (“to know”).

From The Taming of the Shrew, Act III, scene i:

Greetings all!

1. Anthon Berg Liquor-filled chocolate bottles: Cointreau and Luxardo Maraschino Cherry. The cherry was extremely good. I love Luxardo maraschino cherries!

2. Redhead Creamery: Margie Clothbound Cheddar and it's pairing, 2oz of Saucisson Sec (basically a cured sausage). Both made a very tasty treat!

3. The FictionPhantom: Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell. Value: $7.99. Total Value: $16.59. I don't remember if I said before, but I selected Science Fiction for all my choices this time. It's interesting to see what she picked off my TBR list. This novel has been one I've wanted to read for years, but never picked up before. Can't wait to get to it!

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to make myself another 7 and 7 cocktail and try to ignore my throbbing knees!

Some recs, mostly from [community profile] ficinabox!

as long as i can breathe (i can't let go of you again) by beta_babelfish (Dreamcatcher: Deja Vu MV, Yoohyeon/Jiu, 5.2K)
Time-loop variant interpretation of the MV. I thought it was very cool!

let the summer breeze talk to us by Kalcifer (SDR2, Komaeda/Hinata, 2K)
Post-canon fic that did a really neat job with the merging of Kamukura and Hinata.

wave goodbye to the end of beginning (Alice in Borderland, Chishiya & Kuina, 2.1K)
A ‘missing scene’ for these two – just a lovely little character piece.

love can make you come alive (or take your life away) by withhardshipease (Death Note, Misa/L, 10.4K)
Canon divergence where Misa and L bond over sweets late at night; a fun read, and I enjoyed the author’s take on Misa a lot.

Frightening Things (White Christmas, Jo Youngjae/Yu Eunsung, 1.9K)
My gift fic from [personal profile] koreanfandomsex! I enjoyed it muchly ♥ Loved the Eunsung POV.

My mother has today loaned me some knee-high compression socks in a fun design and... the amount of presyncope I've been getting on standing up from squatting is approximately None, despite feeling while squatting like It's Gonna Be A Bad One When I Stand Up. So I'm probably going to be buying myself more of them as my mother's present to me for this winterval.

Obviously I was delighted when I got to page 7 and found the rainbow...

The cat distribution system works in mysterious ways, especially around Christmas time.

Christmas is often painted as a warm, glowing blur of family gatherings, crowded kitchens, overlapping conversations, and a calendar packed with obligations. It's a season of almost too many things going on: travel plans, reunions, old dynamics resurfacing, traditions repeating themselves whether we're ready or not. In the middle of all that bustle, it can feel like there's very little space for surprise. And yet, somehow, that's exactly when the cat distribution system tends to work its quiet magic.

If you've ever heard the phrase, you know it's half joke, half cosmic truth: cats don't always arrive when you plan for them. They appear when they're needed. Suddenly you find yourself with a litter of stray kittens at your doorstep. What do you do? Do you take them in? Do you do TNR or try to find them a home? Well this good and wholesome hooman took in the kittens, took them to the vet, and before they knew it, all the kittens had a warm home. She left one for herself – Nadja. Read the full story below.

It looks like it's time to end 2025 as I began it, by posting to [community profile] chinesestudy ♥ I didn't do as much reading as I meant to this year, but I did a lot of writing.

Today I spent a little time dreaming about language practice in 2026, and, as always, what a great and productive year it's going to be :D

I've turned on anonymous commenting and turned off IP logging for this community, and I'll test it myself on this post. So if you want to do a little writing practice, reflect on this past year or the next, or just comment on the weather, please feel free to do it with or without your name attached.

Love you all, and happy learning!

Now, Boxing Day is a day that we have become used to being a day in which we get blown away by the many exceptional deals on offer at our local superstores. But this year, we decided that we would offer an alternative to the overly commercialized tradition of the Boxing Day shopping spree and instead offer the overly cute concoction of curious cat facts to blow your mind instead. From the abandoned kitten who survived a childhood of illness to become a record holiday cat, to the marvelous maine coon cat and their massive size.

So we recommend settling in to a cozy spot, preferably after having vacuumed the house, because most of the facts we have lined up are to do with cat fur and we would like you to enjoy these facts with the knowledge that your immediate surroundings are clean and fur free. And once you have done that, dive into the deep pile of fur filled feline facts.

Cat pawrents know the truth: once you've adopted one cat, your brain immediately whispers "But what if… another?" And then another. And suddenly your home is less "living room" and more "whiskered wonderland", complete with synchronized zoomies, overlapping purr engines, and a daily game of "Which loaf is on my lap today?" It's adorable. It's chaotic. It's a full-time meowssion.

With every new floof comes extra cuddles, extra biscuit-making, and (let's be honest) extra fur tumbleweeds drifting by like soft, silent snow. Mealtimes become an orchestra of politely impatient meows, the couch becomes a communal nap cloud, and you start learning advanced diplomacy to prevent tuna-related uprisings. Is it a little bit of a cattastrophe? Sure. Is it also the cutest thing in the universe? Absolutely.

These feline funnies are for every cat parent who's ever said "We're full", while still looking at adoption pages like they're a fine art gallery. They celebrate the pawsitively purrfect madness of imagining life with endless toe beans, endless head boops, and endless love. Because at the end of the day, whether you have one kitty or a whole purrade, your heart (and probably your laundry basket) will always have room for just one more.

I never make New Year's Resolutions (and have just realised that it isn't even the New Year yet!) but have decided to go back to the start of the elderly but respectable Colloquial Russian course from my schooldays, and have just been very carefully copying out all the letter-forms from Chapter 1 on lined paper in an attempt to improve my horribly messy Cyrillic handwriting :-)

Have you any post-Christmas resolutions?

Hello detectives,

[community profile] caseficexchange is returning early this year, with nominations opening either mid-January or the first week of February (date TBD shortly). Full disclosure: I'm busy with study in July, August and September, so I'm trying to avoid having a lot of mod work during this period. Last year's schedule had a lot of mod work fall at this time.

Casefic prompt ideas

I asked in the wrap-up 2025 feedback post about adding broad prompt freeforms to the sign-up so people could click the types of casefic they're interested in. I'm still deciding if I want to add these (it will be a non-matching element).

Whichever way we go, I wanted to refine the existing list of casefic ideas that I came up with for last year's round. You can see these here. For anyone interested in helping me create a refined list, what are some casefic ideas I could list in the sign-up guidelines for 2026? Is there anything I missed? Is there anything I didn't miss but you want to flag so I don't exclude it?

I'm looking for simple things like:

  • Cosy anything
  • Murder mystery
  • Heist
  • Solving a theft
  • Medical cases
  • Police procedural
  • Spies and espionage
  • Monster of the week
  • Evil mastermind POV

The less detailed, the better.

I'm taking suggestions until Friday 9 January 2026 @ 11:59pm EST. Please drop them in this post, as it'll be easier for me to reference them. :)

Reminders and thanks

This is also a notice to those who defaulted on their extension for last round that you're required to submit a make-up work before 2026's sign-ups open. Please make sure this gift meets the exchange's minimum requirements and fulfils a request. You can gift it to a 2025 participant or the collection.

If you have not commented on your gift(s) for whatever reason, please do so before sign-ups open.

And I wanted to say thank you to everyone who left feedback on the feedback post. My apologies for not responding—I moved onto my other exchange and, afterwards, proceeded to crash. 🫠 I'll be referring to the feedback when I sit down to edit the rules/guidelines and finalise the schedule.

Please reach out at gumshoeagency@gmail.com if you have any questions that should be asked in private correspondence! See you soon. :)

It's gift card season and there are a couple sorts of books I would like to get with mine, but I don't even know what sorts of terms to start searching on.

1) Something about different legal systems and the philosophies that go with them. How they shape how people think about what the law is even for, and so forth. Would prefer to focus on modern systems, but historical examples are fine if they help illuminate the present. (E.g. I have come across mentions a few times that things work in such and such a way in France or its former colonies because they were shaped by the Napoleonic code.)

2) How the governments of really huge cities/metropoles work.

Blogs or newsletters are okay too. But no podcasts or YouTube series unless they're scripted, please.

Hello to all members, passers-by, curious onlookers, and shy lurkers, and welcome to our regular daily check-in post. Just leave a comment below to let us know how your current projects are progressing, or even if they're not.

Checking in is NOT compulsory, check in as often or as seldom as you want, this community isn't about pressure it's about encouragement, motivation, and support. Crafting is meant to be fun, and what's more fun than sharing achievements and seeing the wonderful things everyone else is creating?

There may also occasionally be questions, but again you don't have to answer them, they're just a way of getting to know each other a bit better.

This Week's Question: What are your crafting goals for 2026?

If anyone has any questions of their own about the community, or suggestions for tags, questions to be asked on the check-in posts, or if anyone is interested in playing check-in host for a week here on the community, which would entail putting up the daily check-in posts and responding to comments, go to the Questions & Suggestions post and leave a comment.

I now declare this Check-In OPEN!

Celui que je fais tous les ans !

If you needed a story that proves the efficiency and sheer importance of microchips - you've stumbled into the right place. Chipping a cat can be the difference between a safe, warm, and loving home - and an unknown end in the woods. Cats with microchips are ones that have a scannable certificate that says "I belong somewhere. I have a home." It's like a little thing in your cat that connects the two of you - besides your great love for each other.

For this one cat, it took time. A long time. We're talking about eight whole years. Her luck was low, but it didn't run out completely. She was taken care of as a "stray" by a wonderful woman for all of this time. It's unlucky enough for this sweet cat that her instincts to run away kicked in right at the wrong time - so at least she had some luck left, to be taken care of. Being a person who takes care of a stray cat for that long takes a lot of dedication, and surely love for cats. We appreciate this woman so much.

And she took care of this cute cat so dutifully that she took her to the vet in a time of need - and this is where they discovered she's cipped. Not long after, the cat came back to a wholesome reunion with her original cat mama.

You know what they say: one man's kitten is another man's treasure.

Did you know that around 3 million cats enter shelters in the US every year? Not all of these are strays, of course; some are taken in by their owners, but still. We don't have any accurate figures for how many cats are abandoned each year because it's nearly impawssible to count, but the number is probably greater than you imagine.

With the number of people who discard kittens like garbage, we're starting to think that most of the world is made up of garbage people. Who could dump something so purrfectly smol, innocent, and adorable? It seems inhumane to us, but luckily, the Cat Distribution System seems to pick up where these awful people left off - for every purrson willing to discard them like trash, there's one purrson who will treat them like treasure.

A family found this cute kitty below when he was only 5-weeks-old. He was tossed from the window of a van into their neighborhood, and they swept in and took him home. Apparently, he was a "spoiled floof from the very beginning", and that's purrfectly fine with us. After such a rough start to his life, he deserves to be treated like the prince he is from that meowment on. Read more about his rags-to-riches story below!

I've made this post a number of times without any luck, but I wanted to try again just in case I have better luck this time. Would anyone be interested in any of the following Nintendo Switch games?

Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! (example on Amazon)
Spyro Reignited Trilogy (example on Amazon)
TemTem (example on Amazon)

If you're not interested but know someone who might be, please point them my way.

For payment, I have CashApp ($Settiai), PayPal, Venmo, or Zelle (nancy.lynn.foster@gmail.com).

1. You have the summer and plenty of money to travel abroad. Where all would you go?

2. What foods would you be sure you got to eat?

3. What landmarks would you be sure you got to see?

4. What airline would you use?

5. Would your knowledge of other languages influence where you went? (i.e., would you be more likely to go to France if you spoke French?)

Copy and paste to your own journal, then reply to this post with a link to your answers. If your journal is private or friends-only, you can post your full answers in the comments below.

If you'd like to suggest questions for a future Friday Five, then do so on DreamWidth or LiveJournal. Old sets that were used have been deleted, so we encourage you to suggest some more!
