That was weird. The actors are pretty and have nice chemistry and I guess I enjoyed parts of it, but I won’t be re-watching that one.
Spoilers behind the cut.
The main character Shao Yi Chen dies in 2025 - he thinks his boyfriend Jiang Jin Teng betrayed him, he runs away crying in the street and gets hit by a car. He is reborn 9 years earlier still in love with the same guy. He resist those feelings at first, because he remembers what happened in the previous life, but in the end he succumbs.
The main romance is pretty meh. There is a lot of obsessive, possessive and violent behavior from Jiang Jin Teng, a lot of forced kisses and a lot of “You are mine, if I can’t have you no one can” talk. Which are the parts I enjoyed. I like that in fiction sometimes. But I would like it much more if they committed to the dark undertones and to the relationship being dysfunctional and destructive. But no, it’s supposed to be read as romantic. And the boyfriend is an asshole only on the outside, inside he’s a softie who was just afraid that the object of his affection would reject him. And that’s why he acted like a possessive jerk. And then there is a happy end and everything is fine and dandy. Which was the opposite of what I wanted and super boring to me.
It’s very short – just 4 episodes 20 minutes each. It’s here on youtube and here on VIKI.
Ok, I think that’s enough of HIStory dramas for me for now. I will check History 3: Make Our Days Count when it airs. But the remaining two History 1 dramas don’t interest me at all. I’m thinking about watching either The Untamed or Love by Chance next.

I have been slowly watching The Untamed, and so far I think it's great fun! Very pretty high wuxia, interesting characters and plot, and (with one glaringly notable exception) very well acted. I hear the one exception gets better, too.

And yes, I’m leaning towards watching The Untamed. It sounds like something I would probably enjoy. I was mostly waiting for more episodes to be subbed. That way if I will like it I won’t have to wait for subtitles. :)

Actually, much potential for abusive stalker!boyfriend down the road. ^_^;;; You know, the kind that pretends everything is wonderful to outsiders and in private emotionally blackmails his victim and destroys their confidence so they can never leave him.
I don't like dark relationships; prefer the the sunny, positive types of relationships but in this instance, how can this relationship truly be fine and dandy after his terrible behaviour? It's really irritating to watch the equivalent of "I love you so you are mine" type of relationship set-up. Didn't we go through that with early BL?

Quite a few of my flisties are watching the Untamed, but I haven't read the novel (and suspect I wouldn't even like it much anyway), so... not sure I want to go down that rabbithole. (Unless the romance is explicit, then I might reconsider. But I don't think it is?)

But I admit I have some doubts, too. I watched the 1st episode of donghua (I think that is the right name for an animated series) last year and it bored me. I don't intend to read the novel either. We'll see. This weekend I started Medical Examiner Dr Qin and I love it, so for now I will watch this one.
