I found out yesterday that the drama is based on a BL novel. Which explains subtext. And there is a lot of it. Episode 5 was delightful in that regard.

Major spoilers behind the cut.

Tang Fan is shameless. After getting kicked out from his house he manipulates Sui Zhou into offering him a room in Sui Zhou’s house. Yes, they live together now. Sui Zhou made an offer because he’s a good person and he already feels responsible for Tang Fan’s wellbeing. Although right after Tang Fan enthusiastically agrees, Sui Zhou has that hilarious “why did I do that?” look on his face face. He has that look many times later when Tang Fan moves in. Because Tang Fan completely disrupts the quiet and peace of his home.

But they have a lot of adorable scenes of domestic fluff. Sui Zhou even cooks for Tang Fan. And in one scene Tang Fan uses Sui Zhou’s bath without asking first, smiles happily completely oblivious to Sui Zhou’s irritated look, and then invites Sui Zhou to have a bath together. But Sui Zhou declines the offer. Pity. :D

There is also another member of this household – Dong’er. She’s sort of a servant, and sort of a protégé/little sister. She was the servant of Tang Fan’s former landlord. And she was saved by Tang Fan with Sui Zhou’s help, after being sold to the brothel. And she’s no more than 12.

There was this lovely scene when she threw herself into Tang Fan’s arms crying and thanking him. And Sui Zhou got such a soft look on his face, the look that said “I guess Tang Fan is not just an annoying nuisance after all.” Aww, he starts to really like Tang Fan. :)

In episode 6 Sui Zhou had to leave to solve the case in another province. Tang Fan is pouting because he has a problem and needs Sui Zhou’s help. Dong’er asks him: “Why are you so angry after Sui Da Ge left? Do you miss him? Then why didn’t you tell him then?” LOL

I wish they would maybe mention torture a little bit less. There are quite a lot references to torture. I expected a lot of murders, but not this. There is the third main character Wang Zhi, who sometimes works against our two main heroes, and sometimes with them. He’s a eunuch who has a high position in the palace, and is a pro at court intrigue. He always has his own agenda. And he’s quite cruel and cold, at least for now. He always hides his real feelings under a polite smile. And he likes to use torture to get information. I hate torture, I really, really do. Thankfully there’s nothing explicit shown, so it doesn’t spoil my fun. But I hope they will tone it down in the future episodes.

New episodes appear on VIKI twice a week – two episodes on Tuesday and two episodes on Saturday. Which is great, because I can’t wait to watch more. :)

Oh, that's good to know!

And thanks for the warning about torture. I really hate it too. *sighs*
