I’m up to episode 10 and I have to admit that my enthusiasm has waned a little. The last three episodes were rather boring to me, apart from Nam Seon-Ho’s scenes. Nam Seon-Ho is the one played by Woo Do-Hwan, and my love for him only grew. Often I just stare at the screen sighing with pleasure and thinking “what a beautiful boy.” The proof is in a picspam below. 😊

I loved earlier episodes so much because they were more focused on the relationship between two main characters Seo Hwi and Nam Seon-Ho – this beautiful, fascinating, deliciously angsty, messed up and filled with deep obsessive love relationship. It’s a classic “friends to enemies” trope done so well and acted so wonderfully.

More with minors spoilers below

Seon-Ho does a lot of bad things to save Hwi’s life in that “you will hate me for it, but at least you will be alive” way. Which is the trope I really love under one condition: that the show with that trope in it doesn’t try to convince me that it is a good and/or a romantic thing to do. My Country thankfully doesn’t do it, so I can enjoy it without any reservations. 😊

There is also a lot of great secondary characters in the drama. Seo Hwi’s crew is wonderful. Main female character Han Hui-Jae is an interesting character, too. There was this fantastic scene when Hwi was all “I must leave you for your own good” and she calmly said something like “No, I will never let you go and I will always protect you.” Which was such a great subversion of the usual way such scenes go. I just wish Han Hui-Jae was played by a better actress. Kim Seol Hyun isn’t that bad, she’s just pretty bland IMO.

In those last three episodes there was more and more about political intrigue and court drama, and that kind of bores me. Mostly because I don’t care for the main players here. Seon-Ho’s father Nam Jeon seemed like and interesting character in the beginning. But later he was made into this moustache twirling villain that is responsible for every bad things that happened to Seo Hwi. And Prince Bang-Won is simply annoying. Also not a very nice person, but mostly annoying.

Seo Hwi himself is part of the reason that I got a bit bored. I was never much into woobies and Seo Hwi is like an uber woobie. The drama likes to pile misery upon misery on him. And I slowly stopped caring and started rolling my eyes when another and another and another tragic thing happened to him.

I still ship Seo Hwi/Nam Seon-Ho, of course. I also ship them in a threesome with Han Hui-Jae. Not many fics on AO3 unfortunately, but I hope I will find something good when I start reading fanfic after finishing the drama.

And now the promised picspam - five pictures showing the beauty of Woo Do-Hwan as Nam Seon-Ho, plus one lovely trio pic.

Nice picspam! You know what, he looks like...who is it in the Chinese drama you like? (I know, that's specific...) the one who was totally convincing undercover-as-a-woman.
