Weird day today. I didn’t really have too much work, but I was disproportionately irritated and making a ton of stupid little mistakes. So I finally gave up and took a long break, which I used for watching fanvids for My Roommate is a Detective on youtube, and then watching interviews with Kim Seon Ho and going “aww” over his adorable dimples. He’s so sweet and shy and humble when people compliment him, like in this vid.

As for My Roommate is a Detective here is my opinion. Behind the cut, because there are some minor spoilers with a few pics and gifs.

For the first 20 or so episodes the drama is full of deliberate BL subtext between the Cambridge educated eccentric genius Lu Yao, who only recently returned to Shanghai, and the newly appointed police inspector and a former gang member Qiao Chusheng (he’s my favorite). It’s not based on a BL novel (or any novel, it’s an original screenplay), but the drama clearly courts the same audience.

I call that watch their engagement watch. 😊 Lu Yao says in the beginning of the scene that they are in a restaurant for couples, there is romantic violin music, and it’s deliberately filmed like a proposal scene.

There is also suggestive leaning against the wall:

And then there is this:

Qiao Chusheng wanted to read something to Lu Yao and he just had to do it like that. 😊

The third main character is Bai Youning, a young female reporter, who becomes Lu Yao’s roommate in the beginning of the drama. They have great friendship chemistry, they bicker and argue constantly, but they clearly care about each other.

Lu Yao becomes a consulting detective and starts helping Qiao Chusheng solve weird and complicated murder cases. The relationship between them reminded me a little bit about relationship between Tang Fan and Sui Zhou from The Sleuth of Ming Dynasty. Lu Yao is brilliant and lazy and cowardly, and a foodie, and rather poor since he cut ties with his wealthy family. Qiao Chusheng constantly gives him money, buys him expensive gifts and pays for his food. And then watches him eat with a fond, besotted gaze. 😊

I enjoyed the drama so much for 26 episodes and then with each following episode my squee pretty much died down. Because then BL subtext disappeared and the last 10 episodes were focused on Lu Yao/Bai Youning romance. Which was telegraphed from the beginning, true, but also so boring, since I don’t think they had any romantic chemistry. At least there was one lovely OT3 scene. Lu Yao and Bai Youning want to leave Shanghai after their wedding and move to Paris or New York, and they ask Qiao Chusheng to go with them. Awww...

My final verdict is – I’m not sorry I watched it. I liked it, despite some reservations about the last 10 episodes, and it brought me a lot of joy.

As for fanvids watched today here are my recs.

Ah, yeah, it's a pity it didn't deliver. Sadly, Chinese shows can also do queerbaiting quite well. /o\
