I still haven’t read the chapter 14 of I Ship My Adversary X Me. I decided to wait until a few more chapters were translated.
But I read quite a lot of SCI novel instead – I’m up to chapter 19.
First about the translations: the translation on Novel Updates is only up to chapter 13 and the quality varies between chapters. And the translation on tumblr gets a bit better later on (or maybe I just got used to it :)) and there are more chapters here, so for now I’m sticking with that one.
Bai Yutong is Bai Yutang and Zhan Yao is Zhan Zhao in the novel – they had to change the names for the drama and I read somewhere why, but I admit right now I can’t remember the reason.
Spoilers for the novel and the drama behind the cut
The most enjoyable scenes so far:
Chapter 12 – the kiss at the university. It’s the equivalent of that scene in the episode 2 when Bai Yutong grabs Zhan Yao by the neck and pretends to kiss him after Professor Xu chastises Zhan Yao for bringing his “scoundrel friend” to the university. In the novel of course Bai Yutang pulls Zhan Zhao for a “passionate French kiss” in front of his students and colleagues. It is their first kiss, although they both don’t treat it seriously, considering the circumstances.
Zhan Zhao is much more impulsive in the novel. His reaction to that kiss is so emotional. He’s so furious with Bai Yutang that he tries to kick him, and he even tries to pull the gun out from his pocket. In the drama Zhan Yao is much more calm and level-headed (up to a point of course). He only falls apart a bit in the 2nd half of the drama, after Zhao Jue messes with his head when it comes to existence of supernatural phenomena.
Chapter 16 – a cute banter when Bai Yutang invites himself into Zhan Zhao’s office
"Have you not seen the sign outside?" Zhan Zhao points at the ‘Do Not Disturb” sign outside of the door.
"I saw it." Bai Yutang sits down opposite Zhan Zhao, "Doesn’t it say ‘Welcome’?"
Chapter 17 – when Zhan Zhao says:
"Somebody was so adorable and sweet when he was younger and called me Ge Ge all the time. Who knew he would turn out to be so annoying when he has grown up."
Heh... their bickering in the novel is so cute and funny.
In this chapter there is also quite a lot about Zhao Jue (although he isn’t mentioned by name yet) and the case from 20 years ago.
And we meet Bai Yutang’s older brother. Because yes, Bai Yutang has an older brother in the novel, instead of an older sister.
I enjoy the novel as a sort of bonus to the drama, because in the novel m/m couples can be text instead of subtext, but there is one big minus for me. There are no women. Bai Qingtang is a guy, Jiang Ling is a guy, Ma Han is a guy – which no, seriously no. I adore Ma Han in the drama, and I have such a nope reaction every time the novel refers to Ma Han as “he” or “him”. I can’t get used to it.
Also I like Bai Qingtang a lot, but Bai Jintang in the novel is so irritating. At least for now. Maybe I’ll change my mind later, but probably not, because there will be the romance with Gonsung, too. And Gonsung is irritating in the novel, too. At least in the drama I only found him boring. During the reading I’m muttering ‘go away’ every time he appears. :)
Chapter 18 – at the end of the chapter Commissioner Bao is looking at the photo from the past.
"The four young men in the photo are smiling so brightly..."
I’m guessing – Commissioner Bao, Bai Senior, Zhan Senior and Zhao Jue.
That’s one of the reasons I want to continue reading the novel. The 2nd season is far away and I want to know what happened in the past. I hope the novel will satisfy my curiosity earlier.

Well, I said I read 19 chapters, but I also read the beginning of the chapter 20. Because in the end of the chapter 19 Zhan Zhao does a stupid thing and almost gets kidnapped and Bai Yutang saves him and then unexpectedly kisses him. It’s their first serious kiss, not in a joking context like in the chapter 12. So I wanted to read about their reactions. And awwww, it’s so adorable... They are both so shocked and confused, poor boys. :D
