Big, big thanks to the people who gifted me 12 months of paid account on Dreamwidth. Thank you so much. You’re the best. ❤️

I finished the first draft of my Yuletide fic. It needs more work, of course, but still the first main step is done. Yay!

There is a new The Witcher book, a prequel about young Geralt this time. Well, I’m assuming it’s a good thing since reviews are rather positive. I’m not really in the mood to read it now, but maybe I’ll buy it for reading during Christmas. 😊

Dramas are always a good things, too. I started watching Fangs of Fortune, and I can’t believe how gorgeous this drama is. The pure aesthetic pleasure I feel when I watch it is something I very rarely feel while watching dramas. I watched 6 episodes for now and I love it so much. Everyone and everything is beautiful. And there is so much shipping potential, m/m and f/f, and m/m/f. And there is already a decent amount of fanfic on AO3, so hopefully I will have something to read after I watched all of it.

But it seems this is the kind of drama I will need cheering up after. Listen, I’m not ashamed to admit that episode 6 made me cry a little bit. I needed to watch something fluffy asap, so I decided to check Rented in Finland, that Korean variety show I mentioned here before. The first episode aired two days ago. And it worked for cheering up very well, because it is cute and amusing. And wow, the scenery... Lapland is beautiful.

I think officially Rented in Finland is only on Viu with English subs, also it’s not available in some countries, so if you want to watch it you might need to find another way.

That was a hard week, health wise, but also because of a few other unexpected and unpleasant problems. Things are better now and I hope it will stay that way. I haven’t been here much these last few days, so I might have missed something.

And this is what I did while I was trying to distract myself from all of the above.

I read my first manga. I mean the first in the form of a physical book. I did read My Personal Weatherman and the 1st volume of At 25:00 In Akasaka online before.

It’s a BL manga called One Week Family (I bought it in Polish translation, which is good BTW). It's very cute, very PG-13, and it gave me a lot of warm and fuzzy feelings.

It’s about young, but already popular actor Fujimaru Ren, who has one flaw – he’s not good at acting with children. But his new movie requires him to act with child actor Yuu. So Ren’s manager proposes that he spend a week living with Yuu. And that also means spending a week with Yuu’s manager Haruo Kei, who basically cares for Yuu 24/7, because Yuu’s mother is a very busy businesswoman, who never has time for her son. Kei is also the former child actor that inspired Ren to start acting. As you can probably guess Ren and Kei very quickly fall in love. 😊

I watched the first four episodes of a new Thai BL drama The Rebound. And I was very pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. From the description it sounded like a straightforward high school BL about former best friends who reconnect after a one year break, and bond over playing basketball in a school team. I was convinced that it would be cute, fluffy and relatively problem free. But no, it’s much darker than I expected, and there are a lot of serious problems. And well, that one is definitely not PG-13. And there is one possible background pairing that I love so much already, even though I don’t yet know if all this ship teasing will lead to a canon ship. But I so want the couch and his dear Director to fall in love and kiss. Please, please, please. 😊

It’s on Gaga and there are two new episodes a week on Wednesday and Thursday. I’m very glad that I like it because We Are ends soon, so I’ll have a new drama to watch on Wednesdays.

The other definitely not PG-13 drama I watched was Japanese BL The Novelist. But you know what? From what I’ve read about it I expected it to be much darker and pornier. Yes, it is about messy, complicated people in messy, complicated relationships, it is very high heat, but at the same time it’s surprisingly romantic, and not just horny and relentlessly dark, and nothing else. It’s about two lonely people who find each other, and who manage, with a lot of complications of course, find their happy ending together. I liked it a lot, and later watched all the sequel movies – Spring Life, Playback, and Continued Spring Life.

I also started a cdrama Live Surgery Room. Mainly because it’s short (28 episodes) and I read that it was very slashy. I watched four episodes for now, and I can confirm that yes, it is very slashy. I like the two leads and they have nice chemistry. It’s that ‘antagonists to friends and/or lovers’ dynamic I enjoy so much, so for now I’m sticking with it.

The first teaser for Kim Nam Gil’s new drama Island.

It looks amazing and I can’t wait to watch it.

My Yuletide assignment – the writing goes slowly but well.

Speaking of writing - I wrote one treat for Trick or Treat Exchange. It’s a Ma Han/Chen Jiayi fic. I planned two treats, but RL interfered and I only wrote around 500 words of the second fic, before I gave up on it. But I plan to finish it, too, it will probably take a while, though.

And last but not least, another tidbit from that post about translation I still haven’t written. :)

MIODZIE, JESTEM DOMEM! ALBO: PIĘTRO INNEJ MIŁOŚCI (ANOTHER LOVE STORY) GRA W JEDNYM POSTĘPKU by Stanisław Barańczak. About dangers of too literal translation - but it will be funny only to people who know both Polish and English.

I’m re-reading Barańczak’s Pegaz Zdębiał and the chapter where he translates Polish idoms literally into English as always made me laugh until my stomach hurt.

A few of my favorites behind the cut.

This year’s Guardian Wishlist – so many good fics and vids and meta. I’m slowly going through the AO3 collection, but I will comb thought comments on the dreamwidth comm later, too.

Interview with the Vampire

At first I was apprehensive when I heard about everything they changed from the books in the upcoming TV show, but every teaser and trailer that I watched made me change my mind. Because surprisingly it doesn’t look bad?

The last trailer especially looks really good to me – sexy and dark and sensuous. I’m still on the fence about Daniel being so old, but I like this older Claudia, and Lestat and Louis have great chemistry and are canonically lovers.

The trailer is here

The Eclipse episode 5

It was so good, I was making heart eyes at the screen all the time. I can’t believe I’m already so invested. I hope this drama will stay as good as the first five episodes until the end.

Majestictortoise posted another installment in her KinnPorsche fanfic series, this time from Chay’s POV. And it is of course wonderful. Yes, I’ve already read it twice. :)

And I think I will finally sit down and write that post about my thoughts on nuances of translation I always wanted to write. Because a few days ago I finished reading a new Polish translation of Anne of Green Gables. And it’s very good and I’m fascinated by all the similarities and differences between this translation and the older one I was used to. And you know what, however frustrating living in this country is sometimes, I love that we can have a national discussion about good and bad sides of a new translation of a popular children’s book here. :)

I still haven’t read the chapter 14 of I Ship My Adversary X Me. I decided to wait until a few more chapters were translated.

But I read quite a lot of SCI novel instead – I’m up to chapter 19.

First about the translations: the translation on Novel Updates is only up to chapter 13 and the quality varies between chapters. And the translation on tumblr gets a bit better later on (or maybe I just got used to it :)) and there are more chapters here, so for now I’m sticking with that one.

Bai Yutong is Bai Yutang and Zhan Yao is Zhan Zhao in the novel – they had to change the names for the drama and I read somewhere why, but I admit right now I can’t remember the reason.

After watching three Chinese dramas (Guardian, Memory Lost and SCI) I decided to branch out and watch a Korean drama. I chose Something in the Rain, because it’s on Netflix and because I remembered vaguely seeing a few positive opinions about it. I watched 2 episodes for now and I like it. I like it a lot. Two main characters Yoon Jin-ah and Seo Joon-hee are both wonderful and they make such an adorable couple. I like a few secondary characters, too and I would like to set a few on fire, mainly Jin-ah’s bosses and her ex-boyfriend – what a bunch of jerks. :)

As for c-novels - [personal profile] qikiqtarjuaq in this post recced I Ship My Adversary X Me. And yesterday I read all of the translated chapters, thanks to two hours delay on my train trip from Warsaw (we were stuck in the middle of nowhere between stations, because excavator fell over the tracks and we had to wait until it was removed). And it’s so great - cute and funny. I laughed out loud a few times. It cheered me up big time. I like the narrator’s voice and as far as I can tell (since I can’t read the original) the translation is very good. Thanks for the rec, qikiqtarjuaq. :)

After I finished I Ship My Adversary X Me, I read two chapters of SCI novel. And it is... not good. I don’t know if that’s the original or just the bad translation. I will read a few more chapters to see if improves later, but for now I’m not impressed.
