Do you remember how I said that I know that this drama would break my heart? Yep, I was right. I’ve just finished watching the 4th episode and I spent the second half of it crying my eyes out. And if episodes 1-3 were already very good, episode 4 was simply amazing. And it’s no wonder that I love Nam Goong Min’s character Lee Jang Hyun so much. But after that 4th episode Gil Chae (the female lead) is one of my favorite kdramas heroines ever. I only saw the actress Ahn Eun Jin in Hospital Playlist before, and she was good there, but here she is fantastic.

Spoilers up to episode 4 behind the cut.Gil Chae is vain, selfish, and spoiled, but when push comes to shove she raises to the challenge beautifully. Despite being frightened and so sheltered before. There is strength in her, and courage and resourcefulness. She reminds me of Scarlett O’Hara, in general there are many parallels to Gone With The Wind, and apparently it’s intentional? At least that’s what I’ve read. And it does look like GWTW was a bit of a starting point/template for My Dearest.

And that last scene when in a tense life-threatening situation Gil Chae instinctively calls Jang Hyun “my dear husband” – I did laugh, and it was nice to have that short, relatively lighthearted moment at the end of such an incredibly emotional, heart wrenching episode.

Also you really can’t read Ryang Eum’s behavior as anything else as him being in hopeless, unrequited love with Jang Hyun. He’s clearly so jealous of Gil Chae. To quote Dramabeans’ review of the episode 3-4:

“Poor Ryang-eum. It’s a raw deal, being ambiguously gay in a heterosexual romance drama, where the narrative demands that you be in tragic, unrequited love with the male lead.”

LOL But still, it’s something I've never seen in a kdrama before – a secondary male lead (and he’s listed as the main character, not a supporting one) allowed to be so openly in love with the male lead. It’s great, and I hope Ryang Eum won’t be villainized later. And I hope he won’t die. Like I don’t expect a happy ending with him in a relationship for instance, but at least let him live, show. Please.

And now I have to go and watch something sweet, fluffy and heartwarming, because that episode broke me, and I desperately need cheering up. 😊
