Yes, I’m still obsessed, bear with my squeeful ramblings for a while longer, please. 😊 I re-watched the drama once already, and then instantly started another re-watch. Below there are a few of my general thoughts about the drama (with spoilers, of course).

Sagesaki calls himself ‘the man you hate so much’ a few times when he talks to Yoh in the first three episodes. Then he realizes that Yoh has feelings for him. But his mistake here is that he doesn’t realize that Yoh doesn’t realize that he has these feelings for Segasaki.

And Segasaki is someone who just doesn’t talk about his feelings. And I guess that he thinks that his actions should show Yoh that Segasaki loves him. Or maybe rather it’s like this: Segasaki doesn’t say ‘I love you’ or ‘I like you’ or anything like that. What he says a few times is that he likes when Yoh depends on him. And I guess he thinks that this should be enough?

And let me tell you – I get it. I get it so much. I guess I identify with Segasaki quite a bit. 😊 So Segasaki assumes that Yoh knows and understands Segasaki’s feelings. But Yoh has such low self-esteem, that he can’t comprehend why someone like Segaski could have feelings for someone like Yoh. Someone slow, weak and incompetent, because that’s what Yoh thinks of himself.

And Segasaki is so good at being social, and at presenting this charming, self-assured persona to the outside world. But it’s also exhausting for him. And oh wow, do I get that so well, too.

No wonder he loves Yoh so much. Because Yoh is Segasaki’s home, he’s someone Segasaki can relax with. And no wonder that he fell in love with Yoh when Yoh made this awful curry for him. Because Yoh was the one to realize that Segasaki looked uncomfortable in a social situation, and he acted in a way that’s very uncharacteristic for him, to help Segasaki get out of this uncomfortable situation.

Here is the masterlist of meta posts on tumblr analyzing the way language is used in the drama. To quote the author:

“Series looking at how the dynamic between Segasaki and Yoh is reflected in the way they speak - specifically, in the way they address each other, and the style shifting, or speech level shifts that they both demonstrate with each other.”

This is such a fascinating read to me, especially since I’m always very interested in translational difficulties and quirks. Because some of the language subtleties the meta author writes about are absolutely untranslatable. And let me tell you - this is one of the reasons I love fandom so much. Because there’s always someone willing to take time and explain things like that to fans from other countries. And I’m very grateful for that. 😊


And I’ll end this post with a few pics of Higuchi Kouhei (Segasaki) and Mashiko Atsuki (Yoh), because they are so unbelievably beautiful. Here is hoping we’ll get the 2nd season of My Personal Weatherman. And if not that, then another drama with them as the main couple.

I think Higuchi Kouhei looks better in those pics then he does in the series where Mashiko Atsuki is beautiful by comparison... Looking at these pictures, I actually think that's a deliberate decision on the part of the production people in that it underlines further Yoh's insecurities.

For me Higuchi Kouhei in the drama was handsome and sexy, but in the normal, realistic way. But in all those photo shoots they did after the drama he looks so beautiful, that I can't help but stare in awe. :)

I didn't mean he wasn't *g*, just that they chose to downplay his looks a little while letting Mashiko Atsuki's character's looks shine by comparison to emphasise how insecure he is.

In the series, they give Segasaki the 'handsome successful young man to bring home to mother' look and Yoh the 'Idol' look. I thought while watching it was deliberate and explained in part Segasaki's jealousy as Yoh doesn't notice people noticing him.

This photoshoot confirmed (for me at least *g*) that response because they're both rocking the Idol look with Higuchi Kouhei's much more fashionable haircut and the, let's face it, 'Idol skin blur' *g* that they only give to Yoh in the series.

Perhaps it comes out of an acting and film making background but I'm fascinated by this type of thing and what's it's signalling in East Asian dramas. Like Shiro's styling in KeixYaku - he has the Yakuza back tattoo that's not visible under his fashionable suits but then has dyed blond hair, still something that will raise an eyebrow or four (*g*) on Japanese women, let alone Japanese men. I have a couple of Japanese colleagues I chat with. ;D
