I finished Mr. Sunshine – as I expected it was an angst fest of the highest order. And, after I watched two dramas written by her, my opinion is that Kim Eun Sook is great at writing bromance, but meh at writing romance. But in general I like her writing, and want to watch more of her dramas.

Major spoilers behind the cut.

Four of the five main characters died. I had another crying fit over the death of Gu Dong Mae, who was my favorite character in this drama.

It made me appreciate his actor Ahn Yeon Seok’s talent so much more. His character in Hospital Playlist was basically a saint and I liked him a lot. Gu Dong Mae from Mr. Sunshine is completely different – he’s so delightfully morally ambiguous and sarcastic, with super angsty backstory (tragic childhood and dead parents) and in unrequited obsessive love, mixed with deep resentment, with an aristocratic woman who saved his life when they were both children. I fell in love with him very quickly. :)

I thought Ahn Yeon Seok was nice looking in Hospital Playlist, but here I find him so fricking hot. Here he is:

And here is a cute BTS pic of the three main actors:

Also I love the way Gu Dong Mae says “nari”. It’s a honorific, it was used by commoners in the Joseon Dynasty to refer to people of higher status but below daegam (대감, 大監), English equivalent of "His Excellency". But Dong Mae almost never says it with respect, it always sounds insulting or mocking, or threatening in his mouth.

Other people liked the way he said it, too, because I found a vid on tumblr that the creator titled “A small, satisfying collection of dong mae saying “nari”. :D

And here's a vid on youtube with a few funny bromance scenes from Mr. Sunshine

And one more youtube vid - Gu Dong Mae’s Moonlight (a fanvid by Efembbies)

I’m considering watching Dr. Romantic just for Ahn Yeon Seok, but sometime in the far future probably, because my to-watch list is long as it is.

My current to-watch list:

Nirvana in Fire – episodes 7 and 8 watched this weekend and I loved them, and especially one scene from episode 8.

General Meng Zhi: “Listen to me, get someone who knows about geology to create a secret tunnel to Prince Jing’s palace. Even if Prince Jing doesn’t meet you in the daytime, he can use the secret tunnel to meet you for a secret rendezvous.”

Mei Changsu: “Can you use better terminology?”

LOL Don’t be so ungrateful, Mei Changsu. Your friend found you a house, where you can have secret dates with your secret boyfriend. You should thank him. :DDD

Good Manager – I started it on [personal profile] china_shop’s recommendation and I watch it interchangeably with NIF. For now I've watched 3 episodes. It’s funny and it helps me unwind in the evenings. [personal profile] china_shop said that it would get super slashy towards the end, but IMO it’s plenty slashy already. I checked if there are fics. There are, just a few, but sill it’s nice to know I’ll have something to read when I finish the drama.

Goblin – because Kim Eun Sook wrote it

Descendants of the Sun – ditto

The Lost Tomb Reboot (it appeared on VIKI recently and I’m sure it will be fully subbed before I’ll begin to watch it :))

And, last but not least - a historical crime drama with Gao Hanyu (SCI’s Bai Yutong) and Liu Yaoyuan (The Sleuth’s Wang Zhi)? Yes, please, give it to me now. :D It’s called The Great Pei and it will premiere somewhere in 2021.

Oh, cool! I definitely want to see Liu Yaoyuan in more things.

Watch Goblin! It was my first kdrama and it broke my heart (crying at 3 am on a school night? Check!). (One of the title translations is Guardian: The great and lonely god or sth like that; I used to be annoyed when I saw Guardian in a fannish place and it was this one Chinese series I had zero interest in :P old times, haha.)

XD That scene in Nirvana in Fire is so cute! I love that as intense as Nirvana in Fire is, there are moments like that, too. <3

Oh my! The cast of The Great Pei sounds great! Something to look forward to.

(My to-watch list keeps growing!)

Ah, I'm so glad you're enjoying Good Manager, yay! :-)

And haha, I didn't realise Mr. Sunshine was by the writer of Goblin and DotS, both of which I've watched more than once, but both of which are really really different (from each other). I look forward to reading your thoughts on them! :-)

Good Manager is a riot, a happy romp, and I found it slashy from the beginning too! Except that I went 'Is it just me or is this slashy?' in the beginning and by the end I was going 'It's not just me! Wheeeee!'

That is a pleasant surprise! :D
