Work is exhausting, physically and mentally. It should get better next week, and I want to take a few days of leave in the second half of May. And for now I cope by watching a lot of shows.
I finished Descendants of the Sun a few days ago. In general I liked it, but the last two episodes were kinda disappointing.
I didn’t believed even for a second that Yoo Shi Jin and Seo Dae Yeong really died. So it was hard for me to care about all the grief and angst. But up to that point I enjoyed it a lot. Mainly because Song Joong Ki is a fantastic and charismatic actor, and he and Song Hye Kyo have great chemistry. And in comparison with other Korean dramas’ usual chaste, close-mouthed kisses, their kisses were pretty hot. :)
I also finished a re-watch of the 4th and the 5th season of Legends of Tomorrow yesterday, just in time for the 1st episode of the 6th season to air. Which I watched today morning and it was wonderful. And to my surprise this time I’m really into John Constantine/Zari Tarazi. Their scenes in the new episode were lovely and gave me a lot of shippy feelings. I even read a few fics and I’ve got one rec:
And Call It Home (2162 words) by little_librarian

Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: John Constantine/Zari Tomaz | Zari Tarazi

Summary: Slowly, Zari moves more and more of her things into John’s bedroom. She’s so caught up in finding Sara that she doesn’t think much of it until Lita asks to borrow a phone charger—when Zari says there’s a spare on her shelf, Lita heads straight to John’s room.
And I started History 4 Close to You on Saturday. But, after watching 4 episodes, I have nothing good to say about this drama. I’m so disappointed, I really hoped that I would like it somehow.
Venting with spoilers behind the cut.
Let’s talk about the secondary couple first.
It’s like they combined Wang Zhen Wen/Wang Zhen Wu from Crossing the Line and Lu Zhi Gang/Sun Bo Xiang from Make Our Days Count into one couple. Only not in a good way.
Fu Yong Jie and Ye Xing Si are stepbrothers, whose parents got married when Fu Yong Jie was 10 and Ye Xing Si was 17 or 18 I think. And like with Wang Zhen Wen and Wang Zhen Wu the younger brother realizes that he’s in love, while the older one is oblivious about his own feelings. Yong Jie is also the same kind of possessive and jealous guy Sun Bo Xiang is, but he’s just sullen, cold and manipulative, and a creepy stalker, with none of Sun Bo Xiang’s sweetness and protectiveness to balance things out.
And the thing is I would have probably liked that if it was a dark thriller about obsessive love and possessive desire, and about a complicated and fucked up relationship. It is definitely not.
In the 3rd episode Yong Jie gets Xing Si drunk on purpose, and then has sex with him. He later admits that he did it on purpose. And Xing Si was so drunk he could barely stand, he couldn’t even walk, and Yong Jie had to carry him to their hotel room. It’s really hard to read it as anything other than rape. But I think the drama wants to present it as Xing Si really wanting it deep down, too, and never admitting it to himself. And the alcohol only lowered his inhibitions.
I mean it’s not presented as a good thing exactly, but also it’s not treated as something really bad. Xing Si is very distraught in the morning, he runs away, and he later says to Yong Jie that he never wants to see him again. But he also feels guilty and thinks that this whole thing is his fault, that he somehow unwittingly seduced or bewitched his younger brother.
As for the main couple – they are both very pretty, but I can’t watch most of their scenes at all. The second-hand embarrassment is too big. That whole subplot about Xiao Li Cheng asking Teng Mu Ren to pretend that they are dating because the girl he likes is a fujoshi and he wants to use that fake dating as a way to get close to her, is so, so cringy. I fast-forwarded a lot.
All in all this is such a let-down. I admit that part of me wants to continue watching just to see how much worse can it get. If the drama was 20 or 30 episodes long I wouldn’t, but with just 10 episodes... I don’t know, we’ll see. And it would have to include a lot of fast-forwarding of course. :)
And while I wait for Vincenzo to appear on Netflix here (on May the 9th), I was looking for a Chinese drama to watch for a change and I watched two episodes of Joy of Life. Mainly because I really loved Zhang Ruoyun in Medical Examiner Dr. Qin and I wanted to see him in something else. And it’s ok, I guess. I wasn’t instantly smitten, but I enjoyed it enough to want to watch at least a few more episodes.

Haha, yeah, those last couple of episodes were so ridiculous. The first time I watched, I got to the end of ep 14 with them lying on the hospital bed together and was like, "But everything's finished now, right? How is this not the end?" I guess some people really like rolling around in the "thought you were dead" feelings, safe in the knowledge there'll be a happy ending afterwards?
I hope next week is much easier for you (and the rest of this week, too!)! *hugs*

Heh, probably. I'm not saying all those grief scenes weren't well acted, but I really couldn't find it in myself to care since I knew nobody really died.
