I’m still coughing, though thankfully less than before. I’m well enough to work and I did work from home last week. But that stupid cough is exhausting. I don’t have enough energy for anything serious, so I’m cleaning all the bookmarks I acquired in the last two months and using a few of them to make a rec post.

Two recs for Queen Seondeok:

A review on Subtitledreams - well, I say a review, but it’s more a love letter to Bidam, that’s why I like it so much. :)

And a rec for a Mishil & Bidam fanvid - Secret Door

A few more fanvid recs:

The Veil – Unstoppable

Kei x Yaku – Killing Me

Semantic Error – Fever

The Devil Judge – No Light, No Light

Under the Skin:

Grind Me Down (Du Cheng)

Crush 2 (Shen Yi)

And one more thing: Thai Names & Honorifics (for the casual BL fan)

It's a funny and educational 14 minutes long vid about Thai names and honorifics made by BL actor Perth Nakhun, using examples from Thai BL dramas.

I’m sick. It’s not covid this time, thankfully, only pharyngitis, but it kicked my ass. It started with a sore throat and a cold on Thursday and now it’s Thursday again, and I’m still feeling awful, because soon a horrible cough joined an array of other symptoms. I’m on antibiotics and on sick leave till the end of the week, but I don’t know if it won’t be even longer since my cough is still pretty bad. I could barely sleep the last two nights because of it.

So what I do is either lie in bed and suffer, or watch dramas to cheer myself up. :)

Not much luck with finding a new kdrama to watch, unfortunately. I watched half of the 1st episode of Hometown Cha Cha Cha – it was boring. I watched half of the 1st episode of Forecasting Love and Weather – it was boring and Song Kang really doesn’t work for me at all. I also watched the first 15 minutes of Business Proposal and the male lead was so annoying that I dropped it.

So I decided to continue my re-watching of Hot Stove League, because that drama is really good and heart-warming, and I can stare at my beloved’s beautiful face and admire his acting talent, which is always an excellent thing to do. :)

And apparently now I have the tradition of watching Bridgerton while I’m sick. I watched the 1st season while I had covid last year. Now I started the 2nd season on Monday and I already watched 6 episodes, I have only two left. I wasn’t sure I’d enjoy it since Anthony was the least interesting person in the 1st season for me, and this season is about his grand romance, but I do, surprisingly so. Anthony’s object of affection Kate Sharma, played beautifully by Simone Ashley, is a great character and she’s so gorgeous. I could stare at her for hours. :)

And I finished Under the Skin. I enjoyed it a lot. The longer review coming later after I recovered. For now here have the rec for a fanvid showing how very shippable Shen Yi and Du Cheng are. :)

First I learned Chinese honorifics, then Korean honorifics, then Thai. It seems now I have to learn Japanese ones. And it all started with corvidology’s post about the Japanese drama Kei×Yaku: Abunai Aibou. I read it on Saturday and thought “ok it sounds good, let’s watch the 1st episode”. That 1st episode turned into three more episodes on Saturday, four episodes on Sunday and the last two on Monday. As you can guess I fell in love hard. :)

Two main characters are the young yakuza leader Hanabusa Shiro and Kunishita Ichiro from the Public Security Bureau of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department.

Ichiro is investigating the disappearance and probable death of his partner and mentor Nakaba Rion, a cold case that was considered closed three years ago. But he’s ordered by his superior to drop that case and he is assigned to investigate Hanabusa Shiro. They soon discover that they are trying to solve the same case. Nakaba Rion is Shiro’s older sister - they were both in the same orphanage and grew so close that they consider themselves to be siblings.

Shiro and Ichiro join forces in secret to investigate the case, which also means them starting to live together in episode 2. And that means a lot of domestic fluff. Here is the example of said domestic fluff – a few gifs from episode 6 I found on tumblr.

There are always short post-credit scenes in each episode, which are pure domestic fluff. And there is also a lot of delicious hurt/comfort in this drama.

I regretfully decided that I wouldn’t sign up for Guardian 520 Day Reverse Exchange. I wanted to, I missed last year because of covid, but I’m not in the right headspace to give it the attention it deserves.

And the most important reason right now is that I have problems with my right arm again, and I don’t know how long it will last this time, and I really should limit the time I spend at the computer after work. So lately I spend my evenings mainly watching dramas, since it doesn’t require me to use my mouse a lot, and when I need to use it I’ve gotten quite good at operating it with my left hand. :)

It’s also frustrating because I finished the first draft of my new SCI fic two weeks ago, but every time I try to sit down and edit it, my right arm says “nope, sorry, not today”. *sigh*

As for drama watching:

I finished Racket Boys and it was super adorable and heart-warming. For me this is the drama along the same vein as Hospital Playlist – an optimistic story about good people doing good things. Villains appear rarely and are always punished. Add a competent script and very talented actors and that’s exactly what I want to watch these days. The guy who wrote it also wrote Prison Playbook, which I gave up after one episode, because it bored me. But maybe I will give Prison Playbook another chance now.

I watched The Man Who Defies the World of BL season 2 (it’s only three short episodes) – I didn’t find it as hilarious as season 1, but it was funny and entertaining and it made me smile.

I started a re-watch of Hot Stove League, because looking at Nam Goong Min’s beautiful face always cheers me up. And it is also a pretty optimistic and comforting drama.

With all those heart-warming dramas around I decided it’s safe to watch something a bit darker, too. :) So I started Under the Skin – a Chinese crime drama about the painter Shen Yi, who becomes a sketch artist at the Public Security Bureau, and Captain Du Cheng who hates him because he considers Shen Yi partially responsible for the death of Du Cheng’s partner and friend, who worked as an undercover agent, 7 years ago.

I watched the first episode yesterday and I liked it. It’s a crime drama but it’s not very gruesome, the leads are good and have nice chemistry (yes, I already ship them a little, enemies or antagonists to lovers is one of my favorite tropes :)), and it’s short – just 20 episodes. There is also a medical examiner, who’s prickly and strict and whom I already like a lot, too, played by Zhang Bo Jia (she was Qing Ge in The Sleuth of Ming Dynasty).

And one more thing that cheered me up this this week:

2Pm's Taeckhun speaking english to bless your ears

That’s it, that’s the vid – Taecyeon and Nichkhun speaking English. But it’s very cute. :) I love when they talk with each other and mix Korean and English - one says something in English and the other responds in Korean or vice versa.

Another hard week at work, but in personal life things are a bit better. So yay for that.

Ok, maybe in another 5 years or so I will be able to re-watch Through the Darkness. :) Because the last episode actually was very optimistic for a dark show like this one.

Racket Boys is my happy place right now. It’s so heart-warming, even when it makes me sob with emotions and it does it at least once an episode.

I don’t need a big plot or big conflict. Just watching everyday life of these people, and their everyday problems, watching them grow and change is enough for me. Watching these teenagers becoming friends, learn about life and fall in love makes me smile. Usually I don’t like an awkward teenage romance, here I have two awkward teenage romances and my reaction is “aww, they are the cutest, I could watch this forever”. :)

And now for something completely different – here are two teasers for Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore.

That was a hard week at work. And outside of work. My older niece has Covid. She’s vaccinated and she doesn’t need to hospitalized thankfully, but still not a great news. And my mom has heart problems lately, and she had a heart attack in the past, so we have to be careful.

Even weather depresses me lately. It’s the middle of March, why there is still minus eight at night, why? I want spring to come right now. Grrr...

*deep breath* Ok, let’s talk about dramas right now.

I’m not sorry that I started watching Through the Darkness, but in a way I am a little bit. It is a fantastic drama, one of the best Kdramas I’ve ever seen. And I will never re-watch it. I watched episode 10 on Monday evening, since I had to wait for English subtitles, and it was amazing, the best episode of the drama IMO. And I had nightmares afterwards. This drama is just so bleak and depressing.

More below (no spoilers)

I still have the last episode to watch and thankfully there are subtitles on VIKI already, so I can watch it during the day today and then cheer myself up with watching something fluffy and sweet.

Semantic Error was fluffy and sweet. And the last two episodes again made go awww a lot. It has only 8 short episodes, but this time I would gladly watch another 8 of these cuties being lovey-dovey with each other. And it has a few really lovely and passionate kisses, which doesn’t happen often in Kdramas.

You can see for yourself on youtube here and here and here.

And since we’re talking about BL dramas here’s the official trailer for a new Thai BL drama KinnPorsche.

It’s about a mafia boss who hires a waiter with great martial arts skills as his bodyguard. And since it’s not about students or high schoolers I want to try it out. :) It starts airing in April and from what I’ve heard it won’t be available on youtube, only on iQiyi.

Coming back to Kdramas - I dropped The Best Hit after 22nd episode (there are 32 half-hour long episodes instead of 16 hour long ones), because they started to devote more and more time to a stupid love triangle, which I knew was coming, but I still hoped it wouldn’t become such a central part of the drama.

But after I dropped it I needed another fluffy drama to watch in the evenings, so I started Racket Boys on Netflix.

It’s a story of a boys' badminton team at a middle school in Haenam and its new coach, who was once a top badminton player, and who’s now in a dire financial situation, which forces him to accept the offer to coach a middle school team in the country.

It’s optimistic, heart-warming and funny drama of the “people are generally good and kindhearted and want to help other people” kind. I really need a drama like that right now.
I watched 4 and a half episodes for now and it already made me weep with emotion twice. And it made me laugh many times. The young actors are all very good and I already care so much and I don’t want anything bad to happen to them ever. :)

And they break the fourth wall with product placement, which is hilarious. In the beginning of episode 5 there is this scene when they eat and tease each other about dating, and then the boys suddenly start to praise tteokbokki they are eating in an exaggerated way. Their friend Han Sol (a member of the girls’ badminton team at a girl's middle school in Haenam) asks them “Who are you guys talking to, though?” and in response they stare straight at the cameras. LOL

And I will end this post with a rec for Shanghai Rainbow Chamber Singers. It’s a chamber choir group. I discovered them this week and I’ve been listening to a lot of their songs while working. This one is my favorite - A Mei (Almost Lover).

I won’t talk about RL because it’s too depressing. So let’s talk about dramas instead.

Kdramas

Through the Darkness is finally back and it’s still wonderful. I watched episode 7 yesterday. Episode 8 will be watched today.

I also wanted something entertaining and uncomplicated to watch so a week ago I started The Best Hit.

I chose it mainly because of time travel aspect. In this drama Yoo Hyun Jae, a popular but problematic member of a famous '90s idol group accidentally travels through time to the year 2017 from the year 1993. In 2017 he meets two students, who are childhood friends, and due to plot shenanigans he ends up living with them in a cramped rooftop apartment, pretending to have amnesia (because he doesn’t want to tell them that he’s a time traveler from 1993, understandably :)) and trying to solve a mystery from his past.

It’s funny and doesn’t require deep engagement on my part, and that makes it a perfect watch in the evenings when I need to unwind.

I’m also in the middle of re-watch of my favorite scenes from Queen Seondeok. And I have almost 1000 words written with more of my random thoughts and squee about Biadam and Mishil. But it’s too incoherent to post now, so maybe next time. :)

BL dramas

Two BL dramas I started watching lately also fit into “entertaining and uncomplicated” type.

First I tried Kissable Lips, but it was bad. I managed, again, 5 episodes, and then dropped it. It was too boring.

So I decided to just choose a BL drama at random at VIKI and I started the Kdrama Semantic Error. And this one I really like. It’s a cute and simple enemies-to-lovers story about two students at the university. One is a serious and strict person, who prizes logic and reason above all else, and doesn’t like to interact with other people much. The second is easy going, stylish, fun-loving and popular. They hate each other at first, and then they are forced to work together for an assignment, and start to realize that the other person isn’t that bad.

I watched 4 episodes available for now and I enjoyed it a lot. Both actors are good and extremely pretty and they have very nice chemistry.

I also started the Thai drama Cutie Pie and watched two available episodes. It’s ok, nothing special for now. But it’s very tropey (there is arranged marriage, secret identity, and pining) and I really like one of the main leads – Zee Pruk Panich as Lian Kilen. He’s very handsome and sexy. So I will be watching for now. :)

It’s here on Youtube with English subtitles.

Cdramas

I don’t watch any right now. But I’ve found out today that Hu Yitian and Zhang Yunlong from My Roommate is a Detective got reunited in another drama that currently is waiting to air. It’s called Checkmate and it’s again a detective drama, which takes place in Republican China, about a young lawyer who becomes a detective and a forthright and wealthy police officer, who helps him to solve cases. So basically the same as their characters from MRIAD. They were very shippy in MRIAD, so I hope for a repeat of that here. :)

It’s based on Agatha Christie’s books and apparently the first season will be based on the following eight cases:

Murder on the Orient Express
The Murder of Roger Ackroyd
Cat Among the Pigeons
One, Two, Buckle My Shoe
Five Little Pigs
The Kidnapped Prime Minister from Poirot Investigates
Three Act Tragedy
Curtain

I hope it will be available with English subs somewhere, preferably on VIKI.

Bear with me for a while as I squee about Bidam some more. Because wow, what a fantastic, complex and complicated character played so beautifully by Kim Nam Gil. I’m so obsessed that I can’t think about or watch anything else until I’m done with The Great Queen Seondeok. :)

My Firefox history tells me I watched the 21st episode on the 2nd of February, and I’ve just finished episode 50. So I watched 30 episodes in 10 days. But like I’ve said before, I mostly watched Bidam scenes, and there are episodes where he’s in just one or two short scenes.

Kdramas

The Great Queen Seondeok

Since I have to wait for more episodes of Through the Darkness I decided to check the role that made Kim Nam Gil famous – Bidam in sageuk The Great Queen Seondeok.

It’s a long drama – 62 one hour long episodes and he first appears in episode 21. Yes, I did start with that episode and fast-forwarded through the scenes he was not in. And that’s how I plan to watch the rest of the drama. I read a bit about the plot so I wouldn’t be completely lost and that is enough for me to enjoy Kim Nam Gil’s scenes.

I’m not surprised that this was his breakthrough role and that everybody fell in love with him. He’s so charismatic and charming and beautiful, and his acting is excellent.

He sees Seondeok (who is not yet queen) for the first time when she pretends to be a boy while she’s on the run from people who want to kill her (apparently almost everybody wants to kill her at that time, yes, it’s all very OTT and melodramatic :)). So he thinks she’s just a pretty young man and he still winks flirtatiously at her.

Here is one of Bidam’s first scenes where he saves the future queen’s life and shows what a badass he is.

This drama is on VIKI, but it’s not available in Poland. But I found the official version with English subtitles on YouTube, too, just bizarrely chopped into over 500 short vids, instead of 62 long episodes. But the quality is very good, so I don’t mind. I watch only Bidam’s scenes anyway. :) It’s here if someone would like to check it out.

The Veil

I finished it yesterday and to my pleasant surprise the last two episodes were pretty good. I even kinda want to re-watch it now, if not the entire drama then just the best Nam Goong Min’s scenes.

Nam Goong Min received Daesang (The Grand Award) for The Veil at MBC 2021 Drama Awards. At the same awards his Chief Kim costar Junho received Top Excellence Award (Actor in a Miniseries) for The Red Sleeve. And thanks to that we now have two super cute scenes between them.

First when Nam Goong Min was walking to the stage to receive the award Juhno got up from his chair and gave him a congratulatory hug. Then Juhno posted a vlog post when Nam Goon Min gives him a congratulatory kiss on the cheek.

You can see the hug in the beginning of this vid. And the kiss here.

BL dramas

Tinted With You

It was disappointing – boring and badly acted. I watched 5 episodes and got so bored that I never watched the rest despite the drama having only 8 short episodes.

Kissable Lips

It’s a Korean BL drama about a romance between a vampire who is about to die and a human, whose pure blood can save a vampire and turn him into a human, too. I watched the first episode and it’s ok, I guess, but for now nothing special.

I decided to check it out because I love vampires, and because of one of the main actors Kim Ji Woong. He plays a vampire here and he also played a vampire in The Sweet Blood – another short Kdrama, but not BL. I tried to watch The Sweet Blood and he was the only good thing about it. He was sexy and decadent and canonically bisexual, and he had very nice chemistry full of banter and flirting with a werewolf guy, but unfortunately this subtext didn’t get turned into text. Instead they inserted him into a boring het love triangle. VIKI tells me that I watched 10 episodes out of 15, but I really can’t remember anything about it apart from a few entertaining scenes with Kim Ji Woong. That’s how bad it was.

And I want to say that it's so nice that VIKI has so many BL dramas now, and that more is on the way. When I made an account 2 years ago they had maybe 10 of them, if I remember correctly.

I really shouldn’t watch any drama that doesn’t have all the episodes available with English subtitles somewhere. Because when I do it only leads to me being impatient and frustrated. :) All the episodes of Reset aired in China already, but VIKI has only 12 with subtitles for now. I’ve just watched that 12th episode. And damn it, Reset. Don’t do it to me, please.

The reason for my frustration with spoilers here )

I also watched the 6th episode of Through the Darkness yesterday and I had basically the same reaction. This is such a good drama and why do you end it here, and I really, really don’t want to wait three weeks for more episodes. Gah...

And here have a quick fanvid rec from Festivids 2021 so this post isn’t only about frustrated complaining. :)

Losing Gravity – a fanvid for 1994 movie “Threesome”, which is about F/M/M threesome starring Stephen Baldwin, Josh Charles and Lara Flynn Boyle. I enjoyed that movie a lot, I watched it a few times many years ago. And this is a great and sexy fanvid.

I finished the first draft of my Chocolate Box fic, yay. I was thinking about one treat, but it probably won’t happen on account of me being pretty tired and having problems with my lower back lately. I spend too much time sitting at the desk unfortunately, at work and after work, so I have to cut it down a bit and start moving more. I started with going swimming again after two year pandemic break. Twice a week for now, because wow is it hard after such a long break. :)

When it comes to drama watching my infatuation with Kim Nam Gil is in a full bloom, that’s why I will talk about his newest drama first - Through the Darkness.

At first I wanted to wait until all the episodes aired, but Kim Nam Gil looked really good in all the previews and my infatuation won, and I started watching as soon as the first two episodes were available on VIKI with English subs. And now I’m sorry that I did. Because it’s very good and I love it, and Kim Nam Gil is fantastic and beautiful. And not only waiting a week for new episodes is hard, but after episodes 5 and 6 air this weekend there will be three weeks break because of SBS airing the Winter Olympics. Gah...

I love this drama, but I have to warn that it is dark – literally and figuratively. Most of the scenes take place in the evenings or at night, and the subject matter is pretty gruesome. It’s a Korean drama, so they don’t show a lot, and what they do show is blurred, but still the murders are brutal and it’s yet another drama when all the victims are women and children, so I had to fast-forward a little a few times.

After watching Through the Darkness I was looking for something relatively light and uncomplicated to watch, and I decided to start the Chinese drama Reset, since I’ve seen a few comments saying that it’s good.

For a Cdrama it’s very short – only 15 episodes. It’s about two young people (a student and a game designer) who are caught in a time loop as they try to stop a bus with passengers from exploding. It’s available on VIKI. As of now there are 10 episodes there with English subtitles, and I’ve already watched 6. And I agree, it is surprisingly good and I really enjoy it.

I still have the last two episodes of The Veil to watch, but I keep putting it off, since the 10th episode was rather boring. I will finish it – Nam Goong Min is good and beautiful, and I do want to finish it for him, but it will probably take some time.

I also managed to watch My Name on Netflix, since it’s so short (just 8 episodes). I don’t have any strong feelings about it, but it was enjoyable and very well acted, even if all the plot twists were rather predictable for me.

And the next I want to check Bulgasal: Immortal Souls on Netflix. Reincarnation is not my thing usually, but I’ve read that this drama had a good villain, and I’m always on the lookout for good villains. :)

I had a very hard week at work, and in the evenings I was so tired that I usually went to sleep at like 10 p.m. But I managed to write a bit of my Chocolate Box fic, so that’s a good thing.

Fandomtrees reveal was on Tuesday – I wrote a fluffy ficlet for china_shop.

Who’s kissing you tonight (660 words)
Fandom: 김과장 | Good Manager (TV)
Rating: General Audiences
Relationships: Kim Sung Ryong/Seo Yool
Additional Tags: Kissing, Fluff
Summary: What if the talk on the stairs in the episode 20 went a little bit differently? :)

Other good things that brought me joy this week were mostly connected to my newest love Kim Nam Gil.

I finished Live Up to Your Name – it was good and I really liked it. And it has one of the best kisses I’ve seen in Korean dramas. Maybe even the best. That scene is here on youtube if you’d like to see for yourself. :)

This drama is on Netflix, but it’s also available officially on youtube here.

Kim Nam Gil also had a cameo in the 1st episode of Honey Lee’s (she played the female lead in the Fiery Priest) new drama One The Woman. He basically reprises his role from The Fiery Priest and it’s a hilarious scene. You can watch it here.

And here have another rec for The Fiery Priest fanvid:

And Kim Nam Gil’s newest drama Through the Darkness has just started airing on VIKI. Yay! It’s a crime drama and he plays the man who becomes South Korea’s first criminal profiler back in the 1990s. Here is the trailer with English subs.

I had my vaccine booster shot on Wednesday and I was so happy because my arm hurt, but apart from that I felt fine on Thursday. I even managed to do my Chocolate Box sign-up then. But yesterday and today was much worse. I’m tired all the time and all I want to do is either sleep or watch something with Kim Nam Gil.

Because my infatuation with Kim Nam Gil continues. He will never steal the 1st place in my heart from my beloved Nam Goong Min, but for now he is firmly in the 2nd place on the list of my favorite Korean actors. :D

And he’s a good singer, too. I spent Wednesday at work listening to his songs on Youtube.

I have no idea what the title of this song is but I like it. And here’s another one from the same concert.

Here are two more songs: one and two.

And here is Kim Nam Gil signing Fighter – the theme song from The Fiery Priest

I also watched two more of his movies.

The Closet

It’s a horror with creepy ghost children and a few jump scares so I had to fast-forward a little bit. But it’s a good movie, very well acted and I enjoyed it a lot. Kim Nam Gil is great as an exorcist, who helps a grieving father look for his missing daughter. And his character provides a few very welcomed humorous scenes in this serious horror movie.

Spoilers with content warning behind the cut.

No Regret

It is considered a seminal film in South Korean gay cinema. It was made in 2006 and it is the first South Korean feature to be written and directed by an openly gay Korean filmmaker.

The movie is available for free on Youtube here, but you have to be logged in and have your age confirmed to watch it, because there are a few very explicit sex scenes in it (or you can download it like I did :)). Which was really quite shocking to me considering it was made in 2006 in South Korea. Another shocking thing was that it had a happy, or at least a hopeful ending for the main couple.

The quality of that Youtube vid is rather poor, but the movie is good and I liked it a lot. It’s also available to buy or rent through Amazon Prime if you’re in the United States, in much better quality I imagine.

If you want to know more about the plot here is a very positive spoilery review with a lot of nice pics from the movie.

I also started Live Up to Your Name, a drama about a doctor from the Joseon Dynasty who travels in time to modern day Seoul, with Kim Nam Gil as the main lead. It’s available here on Netflix. Or rather I re-started it, since I watched the first three episodes maybe half a year ago and then dropped it when something else caught my attention. Now I’m up to episode 8 and I love it.

Happy New Year, everyone.

I wrote only one fic for Yuletide, but it’s a long one for me. And it’s my first Vincenzo fic.

Climbing an ice wall (6308 words)
Fandom: 빈센조 | Vincenzo (TV)
Rating: Mature
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Jang Han Seo/Jang Joon Woo | Jang Han Seok, Choi Myung Hee & Jang Han Seok
Characters: Jang Han Seo, Jang Joon Woo | Jang Han Seok, Choi Myung Hee
Additional Tags: Unhealthy Relationships, Possessive Behavior, Dark Han Seo, Hybristophilia, Mild Smut, POV Alternating
Summary: Han Seok is back and Han Seo finally gets what he’s always wanted. And Choi Myung Hee tries not to fall down during her ice climbing.

I finished The Fiery Priest. I enjoyed it a lot and it made me fall in love with Kim Nam Gil. But now Vincenzo really looks to me like the result of screenwriter Park Jae Bum thinking “hmm, let’s write The Fiery Priest again, but darker”. :) There are so many similarities.

More with spoilers for both dramas behind the cut.

I’m very glad I finally watched this drama, since there is supposed to be the 2nd season, although I couldn’t find any specific information yet.

And I found out while browsing Youtube for BTS stuff and fanvids that the whole drama is available there for free with English subtitles. The playlist is here.

And I have two recs for fanvids showing what a badass Kim Hae Il is:

Light Em Up

Believer

And because of my new found love for Kim Nam Gil yesterday I watched Memoir of a Murderer, which is available to buy on DVD in Poland – it’s a movie where he plays a psychopathic serial killer. And I started Pandora, also a movie, available on Netflix here, where he is again a good guy trying to save a small Korean town during the serious accident at a nuclear power plant. I enjoyed Memoir of a Murderer a lot, I like when pretty boys play psychopathic serial killers. :) Pandora is a bit boring, but I plan to finish it today.

Happy holidays, everyone. It’s Christmas and luckily we have a proper, white, sunny and cold winter here. It’s such a pleasure to look outside my window and see the pure white snow shining on rooftops.

Another pleasurable thing is reading Yuletide fics. I got two fics for The King Eternal Monarch, one short and funny and super adorable about Jo Yeong discovering chibi fanart about himself. Even the summary is delightful: “Jo Yeong + fan art = Enemies to lovers?” :D

Chibi

And the other one is a long post-canon fic full of pining and complicated relationships, but with the happy ending, with Jo Yeong/Lee Gon and Jeong Tae Eul/Lee Gon pairings.

let us flow stream by stream

I’ve already read around ten other fics and some of them were excellent. For now one quick rec, because I never expected to find a fic about Syrenka Warszawa (Warsaw Mermaid) in Yuletide. And it’s beautiful.

said the river: imagine everything you can imagine, then keep on going (1260 words)
Fandom: Syrenka Warszawska | Warsaw Mermaid Legend, Undisclosed Fandom
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Den lille Hafrue & Syrenka Warszawska
Characters: Syrenka Warszawska, Den lille Havfrue | The Little Mermaid
Additional Tags: Mythology References, Polish Mythology, Warsaw, Environmentalism, Epistolary, Sisters, Yuletide Treat, Sirens, Hopeful Ending
Summary:

Perhaps I am foolish for trying, but the world is far bigger now than when we parted ways at the Baltic Sea that fateful day. I cannot defend the city on my own, as I hoped I could, nor even just the river.

It has been a long journey to admit that I cannot do it alone. But pride does not save the river from falling further into disrepair.

Kdramas:

I finished Life on Mars. I enjoyed it a lot, Jung Kyung Ho was fantastic as the main character, but I had the same reservations about the ending as I had with the original show.

More with spoilers below.

I also watched episodes 7 to 12 of Secret Royal Inspector & Joy. This is such a feel-good drama for me. And Taecyeon and Kim Hye Yoon make such an adorable couple.

And then I found out that The Fiery Priest would be on Netflix here only until the 9th of January, so I dropped other dramas for now and started that one so I would have enough time to watch 20 episodes before the 9th. And there will be no problem with that. I enjoy it a lot and I’ve already watched 11 episodes.

I’m not going to get fannish about it the same way I did with two other dramas written by Park Jae Bum: Chief Kim and Vincenzo. But I do like it, it’s entertaining and it makes me laugh. Villains are boring and I fast-forward a little bit sometimes. But heroes are all great, and especially Kim Nam Gil as Kim Hae Il. He’s a wonderful actor, he’s handsome and sexy, and he makes a very pretty woman. The proof is behind the cut below. :)

Also, I never noticed many similarities between Chief Kim and Vincenzo, but wow, The Fiery Priest and Vincenzo look so much alike to me when it comes to the main characters. Vincenzo Cassano is so similar to Kim Hae Il, and Choi Myung Hee is basically Park Kyung Sun (the female lead in The Fiery Priest), just older and more ruthless and villainous.

And here are my watching plans after I’m done with The Fiery Priest:

1. Secret Royal Inspector & Joy – episodes 13-16

2. The Silent Sea – a sci-fi Kdrama on Netflix

3. The Witcher season 2

4. Sword Snow Stride – a Chinese wuxia drama on VIKI. I haven’t watched any Cdrama lately, and this one looks interesting and I like Zhang Ruoyun a lot.

Sad news first - Anne Rice passed away. Here is her son Christopher’s announcement on twitter.

Vampire Chronicles was my first fandom when I discovered the internet in 1999. I have such fond memories of that time. Not everything was perfect, sure, but in general I had a great time and found that fandom very welcoming when I finally decided to start talking to people after half a year of just lurking.

Kdramas

Secret Royal Inspector & Joy – I watched episode 5 and 6, it's still cute and amusing. And I love the height difference between Taecyeon and Kim Hye Yoon. She looks so tiny next to him. :)

Life on Mars – I watched UK original twice and I loved it. I started the Korean version two weeks ago and I watched 9 episodes for now. I like it a lot. It’s been a long time since I watched the original show, and I don’t remember the plot, I just recall a few vague scenes and the ending. I’m very curious how the Korean version will end.

The Silent Sea – it's a new sci-fi drama with Gong Yoo and Bae Doo Na. It will premiere on Netflix on December 24 and I can’t wait. Here is the official trailer.

And I have a fanvid rec:

Battle Royale - Vincenzo vs The Devil Judge

I recced the excellent Vincenzo fanvid made to the same song some time ago. And this one is wonderful, too.

BL dramas

Tinted With You teaser – it looks very pretty.

And here's the trailer for another new Thai drama that caught my attention titled Not Me.

It’s about twins named Black and White. One day White gets the message that Black, who was involved with some illegal business, was viciously beaten and is now in a coma. White suspects that the attacker was one of Black’s friends, so he pretends to be Black to find out the truth.

It looks like a lot of tropey fun, and I hope it will be entertaining. It has 14 episodes and the first episode airs today evening. I currently waffling between watching the first episode as soon as it becomes available with English subs, and waiting for all the episodes to air.

I’ve started checking boyslove subreddit lately once or twice a week, since they seem to post a lot of accurate news about upcoming BL dramas. And that’s where I found this poster for the new BL sageuk Tinted With You.

Isn’t it beautiful? Here is the article with some information about the plot.

The other good news is this: there will be the 2nd season of The Man Who Defies the Word of BL, with the same cast, due March 2022. I’m so happy. I loved the 1st season and I found it hilarious, so I’m glad we’re getting more.

My latest BL drama watching:

I finished A Tale of Thousand Stars – it was ok, the main couple was sweet, but it was a bit dragged-out for me in the second half. It has 10 one-hour long episodes, but I feel like 8 would be more than enough.

I watched the 1st episode of We Best Love – the Taiwanese BL drama about two students who start as rivals at the university, but of course later they fall in love. I didn’t hate it but I also wasn’t wowed. I will probably watch the rest of it sometime in the future since it’s short – just 6 episodes. But dramas about students or high-schoolers have to work much harder at keeping my attention than dramas about adults with adult jobs.

And that’s why I started a re-watch of Manner of Death, since I don’t have any new BL dramas about adults to watch. And what a joy it is to watch again. 😊

I also watched a few trailers for upcoming Thai BL dramas, but only this one looks interesting to me:

Midnight Series: Moonlight Chicken – with the two leads from A Tale of Thousand Stars. I liked the actors in A Tale of Thousand Stars, they are both very pretty and have nice chemistry, so I plan to check this one, too.
